Shane Wright gets a favor

A chance in the NHL for Shane Wright

The Seattle Kraken recalled forward Shane Wright on Wednesday evening.

This gives the striker his first chance with the big club this season after playing eight games in the National Hockey League (NHL) last season.

In seven games in the American Hockey League (AHL) with the Coachella Valley Firebirds so far in the 2023-24 season, Wright has scored four goals and two assists for six points.

The NHL granted Wright an exemption last September so he could play in the AHL, even though he is still a junior. Typically, players under the age of 21 must return to their club in the WHL, OHL or QMJHL if not playing in the NHL.

Last year, the 19-year-old hockey player started the 2022-2023 season with the Kraken. He had one goal and one assist in eight games with the NHL’s 32nd team. Wright also played five games for the Firebirds in the fall before playing in the World Junior Ice Hockey Championships with Canada. He was then sent to the OHL, where the Spitfires acquired him from the Kingston Frontenacs in exchange for two players and seven draft picks.

After the Spitfires were eliminated, Wright returned to the AHL for the playoffs, where he recorded nine points in 24 playoff games.

In addition, the player selected with the fourth overall pick in the 2022 draft is not traveling to Seattle alone. The Kraken also recalled forward Ryan Winterton.
