Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo was ejected in Wednesday night’s game against the Detroit Pistons in the 9th minute of the third quarter after a fierce dunk that gave the Bucks a 73-60 lead.

After coming down from the dunk, Antetokounmpo stared at Pistons forward Isaiah Stewart and was given a technical by official Scott Twardoski.

Antetokounmpo couldn’t believe the call and briefly sat on a courtside seat before finally heading to the locker room. He then followed Twardoski shortly after the call looking for an explanation.

Antetokounmpo left Wednesday without speaking to the media, but his teammates didn’t believe he earned the second technical foul.

Cameron Payne: I was surprised that he was ejected. I’ve never seen this kid ejected before, so I’m on his side.

Jae Crowder: He made a small face and ran off without saying a word. I think that’s why he was so frustrated, like you really kicked me out and I didn’t say anything? I think the first tech would say he deserved it. He deserves that first technician. The second was that he didn’t say a word, so how do you throw him out? He was definitely staring, but I don’t know if that’s a technician. I don’t know that. But I just like the way the group has come together. I think that win right there builds a little bit of character for our group, a little bit of confidence for everyone else to rise to the challenge, and that’s exactly what we did.

Bucks head coach Adrian Griffin said he didn’t give a reason for the second technique, but felt he should be more present before it even gets to that point with Antetokounmpo.

“I think I just have to do a better job,” Griffin said. “Giannis doesn’t complain to the referees.” He’s very respectful of the referees and I think I’m letting him down in that regard. I think I need to be a little bit more, just more vocal and advocate for him a little bit more during games when he gets hit. I dropped the ball on it. It’s an emotional game. He played a phenomenal game. It was exciting, emotional and I thought it moved on pretty quickly. That’s why I was surprised by the second technique, but that’s for the league to decide. I thought he played a great game. Like I said, he is extremely respectful of the game, the fans and the referees. I think I just need to protect him better.”

The two-time league MVP earned his first technical foul when he lost the ball with 3:47 left in the second quarter when Detroit’s Cade Cunningham was called for a foul on Bucks point guard Damian Lillard.

Shortly after his brother left the field, Thanasis Antetokounmpo received a technical.

Giannis Antetokounmpo finished his night with 15 points on 6 of 16 shooting. He also had nine rebounds and five assists.

Prior to the technical fouls against the Antetokounmpos, Stewart and Jae Crowder had received double technical fouls due to an off-ball foul by Stewart following a basket by Bobby Portis. Brook Lopez also suffered a technical error in the second quarter when he called for a foul.

In addition to Twardoski, the game’s referee, the officiating team also included team chief Rodney Mott and referee Mitchell Ervin.

Official declares technical foul on Giannis Antetokounmpo to pool reporter

Mott discussed the whistles after the game with a pool reporter (questions in italics):

Explain why Giannis Antetokounmpo was called for a technical foul at 3:47 of the second quarter. It looked like it was off the ball as the play was a personal foul on Cade Cunningham that sent Damian Lillard to the line.

MOTT: During the game, Giannis drives to the basket thinking he is being fouled. He then approaches the referee and uses profanity, which constitutes an unsportsmanlike technical foul and was assessed at that time.

Explain why Giannis Antetokounmpo was warned for a technical foul after a dunk at 9:00 a.m. of the third quarter and was subsequently ejected.

MOTT: After the dunk, Giannis turns to his opponent and taunts him, resulting in a taunting technical foul, an unsportsmanlike foul. And he was ejected from the game under the rule because two unsportsmanlike technical fouls result in being ejected from the game.

How many times has Giannis been ejected?
