The classic The Nightmare Before Christmas is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year! Specifically, we learn that Disney did not want the film to be released in their name, something they would certainly have reconsidered if they had sensed its enormous success. Henry Selick explains this and adds that the box office success would have been even more resounding if they had attached their name to the film. However, he understands her position. The film was unlike any other from the big-eared company. Tim Burton even adds: “Here there was stop motion, a character without eyeballs, everything to the music. How do you feel? Of course, Disney was nervous about the whole thing.” The director is aware of the discrepancy in his work. However, this didn’t stop Disney from changing their minds in 2012 with Frankenweenie, another macabre stop-motion film from Tim Burton that was actually released under their name.

As a reminder, “The Nightmare Before Christmas” tells the story of this eponymous character, who is the Pumpkin King of Halloween Town. However, he grows tired of this party, even though he discovers better things elsewhere. In fact, one day he visits Christmas Town and decides to celebrate this event too. To do this, he will kidnap Santa Claus and replace him with his morbid and corpse-looking friends. Then he is confronted with the fear of the children he wants to make happy. This resulted in him being shot down by military forces. It will take no less for the protagonist to come back to life, rediscover the taste of the Day of the Dead and open his eyes to the true meaning of Christmas. When the film hit theaters, it didn’t gain the aura it has today. It only gained fame when it was released on VHS and later on DVD. The Nightmare Before Christmas is available to stream on Disney+.
