Guns N’ Roses finally unveils “The General” after 16 years of waiting – Rolling Stone Magazine

The era song “Chinese Democracy” first surfaced in 2007 and Guns N’ Roses eventually performed it live at the Hollywood Bowl.

Guns N’ Roses played the penultimate concert of their 2023 tour at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on Thursday evening and took the opportunity to perform “The General”.

“The General” is one of many songs from the Chinese democracy era that fans heard about long before the album’s release. Former Skid Row singer Sebastian Bach praised it in a number of interviews. “It’s by far the heaviest piece of metal I’ve ever heard from Axl,” Sebastian Bach told Metal Edge in 2007, “that slow, crunchy riff with those high, shrill vocals and screaming vocals.” I asked, “When is it coming out? that?” And he said, “2012. It appears on the third album. It’s related to this song. It’s a trilogy. The lyrics also fit in.” He planned everything. He is simply different from other people. He does things at his own pace and in his own way, but you know… the world is not prepared for what I heard. »

The following year, Bach told Rolling Stone that Rose had told him that “The General” was the sequel to “Estranged.” “He’s like the George Lucas of rock,” Bach said. I know for a fact that it wasn’t him who said, “Let’s wait and work on something more.” [Chinese Democracy]“. He has a completely new sales team. Irving Azoff is in charge, as is Andy Gould. They’re trying to figure out the best way to spread the music. »

When Chinese Democracy was released this year, “The General” was not included on the album. Over the years, she has earned legendary status among the Guns N’ Roses fan base. Some fans have even created fake versions that can be found on YouTube. However, this is the first time the public has heard the song in its entirety.

There hasn’t been a new Guns N’ Roses album since Chinese Democracy, but the reformed version of the group has released new recordings of “Absurd,” “Hard Skool” and “Perhaps” in the past two years. These three songs are from the Chinese Democracy Sessions. A single from “Perhaps” is scheduled for release on December 8th, with “The General” as the B-side.

Guns N’ Roses will conclude their 2023 tour on November 5th at the Hell and Heaven Fest in Toluca, Mexico. They will headline a festival that also includes Muse, Slipknot and Billy Idol.
