The Minnesota Supreme Court on Wednesday rejected an attempt to block Donald Trump from appearing on the ballot in the Republican primary for the 2024 presidential election in this northern US state.

“No state law prohibits a major political party from placing a candidate classified as ineligible for the presidential nomination on the ballot,” Chief Justice Natalie Hudson wrote in her decision. In doing so, she rejected the request of voters who called for Donald Trump to be excluded from the primaries and the 2024 presidential election.
The petitioners cite Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, which prohibits any person from holding public office engaging in “insurrection or rebellion” after pledging to support and defend the Constitution .
The relevance of this legal instrument given that Donald Trump violated his oath with the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021 is controversial among experts.
The rejection in Minnesota comes as legal action is underway in several other states to disqualify the former president from the race for the White House.
Despite its ruling, the Minnesota Supreme Court said it could, however, consider the presidential election petition at a later date if Mr. Trump actually wins the Republican nomination and another petition is filed.
The Republican billionaire must stand trial in federal court in Washington starting in March 2024 for his alleged attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.
