Migrants clear road blockage after negotiations with Mexican authorities

Mexico City, November 10 (Prensa Latina) Mexico’s National Migration Institute (INM) reported that migrants lifted the blockade on a stretch of road in Huixtla, Chiapas, and accepted the assistance of that immigration agency.

Regarding the main demand of the members of the caravan of foreigners – whose aim is to reach the border with the United States – related to the issuance of immigration documents in order to be able to move freely through the national territory without prior examination of each individual case, the INM explained to them, that the immigration law and its regulations do not provide for this.

However, it has been stipulated that the cases of girls, boys and adolescents with a migrant background will be referred through the national system on the basis of the law and the best interests of the children in order to fully ensure their rights and their safety and care for the comprehensive development of the Family (DIF) or its equivalent in state institutions.

In order to maintain the principle of family unity, the adults in whose care these minors are also under the guardianship of the DIF.

To this end, the INM provides means of transport for the transfer of these vulnerable groups to the accommodation designated by the DIF authorities and is under the supervision of officers for the protection of children and vulnerable groups and human rights representatives.

Elements of Grupo Beta and the INM officers for the protection of children and vulnerable groups have assisted them and also enabled them to receive medical services from state and municipal organizations, while continuing to provide protection to caravanners to avoid accidents and to preserve their integrity and life.

The INM reiterated that the Government of the Republic, through its institutions, has every opportunity to meet the needs of people who transit the national territory irregularly and to provide them with a safe and dignified environment that allows migration to be safe, regular and orderly.
