The mayor called on supporters of both camps to calm their enthusiasm.

“I call for collective responsibility because, given our sense of helplessness and fear, we must not give in to violence. I would also like to call for moderation and respect,” she pleaded.

The mayor, who was accompanied by representatives of the Montreal City Police Service (SPVM), assured that any hate crime would be investigated.

“I want to send a message to the people who commit hateful and criminal acts: you will be held accountable for your actions!” she said.

“There is no place for hatred, there is no place for intimidation, there is no place for violence,” the mayor emphasized.

His call for calm was echoed by many politicians, including Prime Ministers François Legault and Justin Trudeau, both of whom have denounced anti-Semitic acts in recent days while calling for calm.
