A new small island has been created off the coast of Japan due to the eruption of an underwater volcano. The unnamed volcano lies about a kilometer off the southern coast of Iwo Jima, which Japan calls Iwoto: it began erupting on October 21, and within ten days ash and volcanic rock piled up on the sea floor, creating the island from nothing. with a diameter of about 100 meters and a height of up to 20 meters above sea level.
Experts are still analyzing the development, including details of the deposits, according to Yuji Usui, an analyst at the Japan Meteorological Agency’s volcano department. However, due to the material it is made of, the new island “may not last long,” they said.
