Green hydrogen: A $4 billion factory is being built in Shawinigan

In 2028, a factory consisting of a wind and solar farm and an electrolyzer will be built in Shawinigan to produce 70,000 tons of green hydrogen to decarbonize Quebec.

This was announced by innovative project developer TESCanada H2 Inc. on Friday morning when the Mauricie project, worth $4 billion in private funding, was officially unveiled.

This is one of Quebec’s largest decarbonization projects announced to date, as the province plans to reduce carbon emissions by 800,000 tonnes each year.

The Mauricie project alone will make it possible to achieve 3% of Quebec’s greenhouse gas reduction targets by 2030.

“By leveraging innovation and the strength of our resources, TES Canada is contributing to the transition towards a new, more sustainable energy era, fostering the emergence of a more resilient and greener economy,” emphasized François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation and Science and Industry.

The green hydrogen produced at the new plant will be used primarily for heavy transport, which alone accounts for almost 10% of emissions in Quebec. The rest is used to produce renewable natural gas.

“Green hydrogen will allow us to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels in certain transport sectors and in several industrial sectors where electrification is not possible,” explained Minister for Business, Innovation and Energy Pierre Fitzgibbon.

In addition, more than 1,000 jobs will be created during construction. Ultimately, the Mauricie project will offer 200 permanent jobs.
