ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference announced today that the University of Michigan has been found to be in violation of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Policy for conducting improper, in-person scouting operations over several years that resulted in an unfair competitive advantage jeopardized the integrity of competition.

Big Ten Conference Agreement 10.01 states, in part: “The Big Ten Conference expects that all competitions involving a member institution will be conducted without compromise to fundamental elements of sportsmanship.” These fundamental elements include the Integrity of competition, courtesy towards everyone and respect, especially towards opponents and officials.”

As punishment to the institution, the university’s football team must play without its head coach for the remaining games of the 2023 regular season, effective immediately. This disciplinary action shall not prevent the University or its football team from allowing its head football coach to participate in practices or other football team activities other than the game activities to which it applies. For the avoidance of doubt, the head football coach may not be present at the match venue on match days to which this disciplinary action applies.

The Big Ten Conference will have no further comment at this time.
