Three day break due to power outages in Ecuador

The Ministry of Energy and Mines noted in a statement that the measure “is due to the positive measures implemented as well as the improvement in flows.”

With this announcement, Ecuadorians will not have power outages for at least three days in a row, as they reported the day before that the measure will not be applied on weekends.

The rains recorded in the Amazon and the mountains in recent hours improved the flow of some rivers that feed the hydroelectric plants.

The break in power outages is welcome news for the residents of this country, but they criticize the executive branch for not taking timely measures to prevent it.

In addition, complaints about the announcement of the cuts shortly before they come into force are piling up on social networks, which is affecting people’s and companies’ planning.

The reason for this rationing, according to the Minister of Energy and Mines, Fernando Santos Alvite, is to prevent a “collapse” of the electricity system, whose supply capacities have been reduced due to the severe drought that is affecting the country.

Ecuador had not suffered a blackout since 2009, during the administration of then-President Rafael Correa, which encouraged the construction of hydroelectric projects and even exported energy to Colombia and Peru.
