A man dies in an accidental shooting while hunting in

Fernando Fernández, 66 years old, former mayor of the municipality of Faraján (Málaga, 270 inhabitants) until the beginning of this year, died this Saturday from an accidental shot during a hunting party on a farm on the outskirts of Antequera. According to the emergency service 112 Andalucía, the man died immediately. “Fernando was a good man and was deeply loved by his neighbors in Faraján, where he was mayor for 20 years. Today we feel your unexpected loss. My condolences go out to his family and friends,” said the general secretary of the PSOE in Malaga, Daniel Pérez, on his Twitter profile. Rogelio Barragán, current councilor of the municipality of Genal Valley, has announced the proclamation of three days of mourning.

The events occurred around 11:30 a.m. Saturday morning. At that time, the Andalusian emergency service 112 was informed by several calls that a 66-year-old man had been accidentally shot during a hunt on a farm near the A-7 highway, near the port of Las Pedrizas, in the municipality of Antequera. Guardia Civil and National Police agents and a 061 helicopter carrying a medical team traveled to the area. When they arrived, all they could find was his death.

It was the PSOE of Málaga, through its provincial secretary Daniel Pérez, who confirmed the identity of the deceased hours later. Shortly afterwards, various party officials mourned the death. “Your fight for your neighbors will always be present,” said José Bernal, the party’s organizing secretary in the province of Málaga. “Shocked by this terrible news that Fernando, a good person, friend and devoted to his people, Faraján has been losing his life for years pursuing his hobby and living in my country. My sincere condolences go out to the family, friends and colleagues,” added José Luis Ruiz Espejo, deputy in the Andalusian Parliament and Secretary for Social Services, Seniors and Functional Diversity of the PSOE in Andalusia. “A big hug to his family and friends, as well as to his socialist colleagues from Malaga,” Juan Espadas, general secretary of the Andalusian Socialist Party, later added.

Fernando Fernández was elected mayor of his city, Faraján, in 2003. Since then, he managed to maintain this position in the various elections until, earlier this year, he announced his decision not to run again in last May’s elections. The recently retired man with two daughters had previously announced in 2019 that this would be his final term, making it official on Feb. 20 with a statement on the city website. In the text he reviewed the changes in the small community of Serranía de Ronda over the last two decades.
