NEW YORK (WABC) — Amtrak has temporarily suspended service between New York City and Croton-Harmon due to structural problems with a parking garage over the tracks on West 51st St. between 10th and 11th Avenues.
Passengers can travel on Metro-North trains from Grand Central Terminal between NYP and CRT, where fares will be honored.
Other schedule changes include:
Trains 233, 234, 235, 237 240, 241 244 and 280 are canceled
Trains 49 and 69 will depart from Albany (ALB).
Trains 63, 64, 232, 236, 238, 239, 243, 281, 283, 284 and 294 start or end in the CRT
The New York mayor’s office said that as soon as the city became aware of structural problems with the garage, Department of Buildings engineers immediately traveled to the site, issued work instructions and would discuss the situation with Amtrak.
“We will continue to work around the clock to protect public safety and maintain regular communication with drivers,” the mayor’s office said in a statement.
In a statement, Amtrak said the issue involved a “non-Amtrak, privately owned building over the Empire Line tracks in New York City.”
The Hudson View Garage on West 51st Street has been closed since Friday for emergency repairs. It will remain closed until further notice and vehicles will remain inside.
It is unclear how long Amtrak service will be affected, but it is expected to impact the Monday morning commute.
It’s particularly concerning for neighbors because there’s a high-rise apartment building directly above the garage.
“That makes me very concerned about what’s holding up this whole 30-story building. Beneath our feet is just a web of things we know nothing about. The more buildings we put on the ground, the more “We’re not really on a solid foundation,” said Catie Savage.
Amtrak recommends riders take Metro-North to Croton-Harmon in Westchester and then transfer to the Amtrak line the rest of the way to Albany.
