Nicolás Maduro announces that he will hold a referendum on the annexation of Guyanese territory to Venezuela

The territory corresponds to approximately 74% of Guyana’s area; The dispute between the two countries has existed for more than a century

The Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro announced via his profile X (formerly Twitter) on Friday the 10th, which will hold a referendum to annex the region Essequibo The Venezuela. The territory is led by Guyana and has been disputed between the two countries for more than 100 years the area is around 160,000 square kilometers. The region is rich in natural resources and accounts for around 74% of Guyana’s territory. “Let us defend our homeland by debating with the people and all political forces, reaching consensus and fighting for Essequibo so that the truth triumphs over Venezuela. “On December 3rd we will vote “yes” five times,” said the Venezuelan President in the publication and stated that the referendum will take place on the 3rd of next month. The Government of Guyana released a statement on Saturday 11th declaring that the referendum was an international crime and that Venezuela was attempting to weaken the country’s territorial integrity, stressing that the referendum was illegal and of no kind have international legal effect.
