Mount Etna in Sicily spews lava and ash but near Naples remains quiet

The lava fountains rose several hundred meters into the dark night sky. A kilometer-high cloud of magmatic gases and ash, lit red by lava from below, formed above the 3,350-meter-high volcano – always an impressive and fascinating sight for residents. Ash fell in several towns around the volcano. However, there was never any danger to the population; Not even air traffic at Catania airport had to be interrupted. On Sunday, a large lava flow could still be seen slowly descending into the valley in an uninhabited area. Etna calmed down again on Monday and the Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) managed to get everything right.
