“Bleu Blanc Rouge”: Serge Lemoyne’s works will soon be exhibited at Quebecor

Some of painter Serge Lemoyne’s most important works will be on display at Quebecor’s headquarters starting next week.

An ardent supporter of the Montreal Canadiens, Serge Lemoyne is considered one of Quebec’s bravest postmodern artists. In the 1970s, he painted his famous blue-white-red series in the Habs’ full glory, using only the team colors for these paintings.

Some of his acrylic paintings, including Dryden, which references goaltender Ken Dryden’s famous mask, can be admired in the Quebec Pavilion of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA).

The painter, who died in 1998, exhibited his first works at the MMFA in 1965. At the same time, he also presented solo exhibitions at the Montreal Museum of Contemporary Art and worked on the design of the nightclub environment of the Youth Pavilion at the 1967 World’s Fair in the metropolis.

Serge Lemoyne was a student at the Montreal School of Fine Arts from 1958 to 1960 and participated in several socially conscious art events in the 1960s and 1970s. His works are now among the most prestigious collections of contemporary art from Quebec and Canada and can be found in the country’s most important museums.

His visual practice is based on the debates between the automatists and the sculptors and is located halfway between pop art and socially conscious art.

The opening of Serge Lemoyne’s Bleu Blanc Rouge exhibition will take place by invitation only on Monday, November 20, at 6 p.m. at the Museum Space of Quebecor headquarters in Montreal.
