The 4,000 residents of Grindavik, Iceland, were evacuated due to the high risk of a volcanic eruption. A 15 km long fault is open in the south of the island.

In Iceland, where there was traffic three days earlier, a gaping crack is visible on Monday, November 13th. It grew almost visibly. Smoke rises from the asphalt and escapes between the cobblestones of a village divided in two. “We can see the fault opening up. These holes grow horizontally and vertically,” explains Gregory Paul de Pascale, professor of geology at the University of Iceland.

It is impossible to know when the outbreak will occur

As Grindavik, Iceland, deforms under the pressure of magma, authorities are allowing the 4,000 residents who were hastily evacuated over the weekend to return on Monday to collect their belongings. “I didn’t believe it when I left. I only took a small bag with me, but it was much worse than I thought,” assures a resident. The likelihood of an eruption is high, but it is impossible to predict when it might occur along this 15km-long fault in southwest Iceland.
