Marcelo Ebrard will stay in Morena. The former chancellor announced his decision after the National Commission on Honesty and Justice ruled at the last minute that there were improper practices in the process and poll that determined Claudia Sheinbaum as a presidential candidate that contradicted the principles the party stood. However, he has warned that he will persist in his pursuit of the presidency of the republic. “He is not a traitor who says there was a practice that violated the statutes. Because there was,” he said in his message on Monday defining his political future for 2024. The pact he made with the presidential standard-bearer stipulates that the former official will be the one to announce the party’s decision at its conference on Monday. The former federal minister denied that it was a last-minute pact, as his political environment confirmed. It is expected that in the next few hours the partisan commission will publish the decision of the appeal with which Ebrard sought to annul the results of the poll. In its ruling, the party organization admits that there were irregularities, including the guilt of some officials against whom sanctions will be imposed, but the process will not be reopened, as the official explained.
From a hotel in Mexico City, with the original document in hand and accompanied by his wife Rosalinda Bueso, the chancellor said he had just received the resolution. Ebrard took as a reference the baton that was in Sheinbaum’s possession after President Andrés Manuel López Obrador handed him the reins of Morena, suggesting that it was a reaction from the presidential standard-bearer. “She is already controlling such reactions with the command staff. “We just received it,” he emphasized. “It is a political agreement, it has nothing to do with any allegations against me,” he said at least three times. In this pact between the former Chancellor and Sheinbaum, in addition to candidacies and positions for his closest relatives, there is also a promise to integrate their representatives into the survey and election commissions. This agreement also includes the removal of Ivonne Cisneros as president of the Morena Poll Commission. Meanwhile, “El Camino de México” – the group of Ebrard supporters – will continue to build itself within the movement, as a de facto political bloc or tribe.
“Why should I give up what we have done for 24 years?” asked the former Chancellor. Although the breakdown of his relationship with the president has become apparent. The former chancellor emphasized his loyalty and left the door open to talk to the president about political dissolution. “I have always acted with gratitude and loyalty. “It will be time to delve deeper into this topic at another time,” he opened. As EL PAÍS reported, Ebrard’s stay in the party was due to the fact that his demands were met to a certain extent: the recognition that there were irregularities in the process; the guarantee that his political circle will have places in the 2024 candidacies and in the governing bodies of the National Executive Committee; and that his bloc is recognized as part of the party. “This is a political agreement with Claudia Sheinbaum,” said Ebrard, who revealed that he had two meetings with Morena’s presidential standard-bearer.
“I will always try to run for the presidency of the Republic,” warned Ebrard, who expressed satisfaction with the decision and decision to remain in the party. “I stick with this red ball, it was not in vain, we were loyal to the people who voted for us, we fought for the truth. “What we said happened, happened,” he said consolingly. Morena’s national leadership, chaired by Mario Delgado, and the National Commission for Honesty and Justice announced last week that the resolution of the allegations raised by the former chancellor would not come until December. However, the negotiations with Sheinbaum took place at the last minute, without notice to Mario Delgado or the Honesty Commission, which drafted the ruling this Monday and continues to refine details while waiting for Ebrard to agree to them.
“Once I knew their position on this, I could be confident that we would continue to fight in Morena. I don’t know the details, but she is the one who has the political coordination. “This is the result of this political agreement, this pact that you call an understanding,” the presidential candidate said as he responded to Sheinbaum’s intervention so that the party’s internal committee would issue a quick solution. In his message he also made clear the break he has with the national leader of Morena, whose political mentor he is and whom, according to his relatives, he considers a traitor. “I haven’t spoken to Mario Delgado, this is an understanding with Claudia, Mario is not at the meeting, he doesn’t know the details. It seems to me that it was appropriate to speak directly to Claudia and that is what I did,” said Ebrard.
He has also pointed out that this verdict, and therefore the negotiations with the presidential candidate, represent a political failure on the part of the leader. “It is a defeat for their political line. I’m not turning the tide, it will be a process that we have to follow. I believe that Mario represents a different political line. What I think should be recognized is that Claudia’s political line is different, otherwise there would not be this understanding.”
Although Ebrard said he agreed with the resolution, he even attacked President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s spokesman, Jesús Ramírez Cuevas. When he mentioned it, there was silence. “I would have a positive feeling because even though we had very great adversities: insults, hate speeches, even YouTubers were thrown at us to slander us, the Jesus bots [Ramírez Cuevas] and companies. And despite everything that has happened, it is the first time in the history of Morena that they recognize that serious practices have violated the statutes and that they will face sanctions. As far as I know, this has never happened before,” he said.
Ebrard’s announcement and the negotiations surprised his supporters. Early on Monday, the former chancellor called them to a meeting in front of his embassy, where he informed them about the agreements. Until this Sunday, a majority of them found themselves outside Morena and with an undetermined direction. “We are surprised because there was a tense, complicated atmosphere, defamation and insults in the Chamber of Deputies. Today we met him at nine in the morning. Nobody knew about these arrangements with Claudia [Sheinbaum]. Since we believed that the resolution would not be valid until December, we found ourselves already outside Morena. “It is something unexpected, abrupt, but it was necessary to ensure the stay of Marcelo and his team,” federal deputy Emmanuel Reyes said in an interview after the announcement.
