Israel-Hamas war: 10 more Canadians evacuated from Gaza

Ten more Canadians, permanent residents or family members entered Egypt through the Rafah border on Monday as part of the evacuation of nationals who have been in Gaza since the war with Israel began on October 7, 2023.

These 10 Canadians are in addition to the 356 people who have already crossed the border since it opened. Nine other citizens are said to have crossed the border thanks to a third person.

This was confirmed by Global Affairs Canada (GAC) in a press release, adding that Canada cannot determine when and how many people can cross each day.

“As the situation remains uncertain and unpredictable, Canadians should expect significant delays and unannounced closures at the Rafah border crossing,” it said.

“Canada continues to work with all affected parties to ensure that Canadian citizens, permanent residents and their eligible family members currently in the Gaza Strip can quickly and safely leave the country,” it also said.

Refugees crossing the Egyptian border are allowed to stay in the country for up to 72 hours. The Canadians will therefore be repatriated to the capital Cairo to continue their return to Canada.

According to AMC data, there are currently 5,701 Canadians on the list of Canadians living abroad registered in Israel, 449 Canadians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip and 18,053 in Lebanon.
