Victoria Ruffo is the queen of crying in Mexican soap operas. But she is not the only actress on television whose characters in melodramas are marked by tears. There are the cases of Erika Buenfil and Daniela Castro as worthy representatives of what it means to tear one’s clothes in fiction. However, outside the scope, Castro displays an emotional affectation enough to cry. Due to a severe stroke of fate in his personal life: the death of his mother, he cannot do it or finds it difficult to actually do it.

In the 90s he starred in successful dramas such as Chains of Bitterness (1991), Triángulo (1992) and Cañaveral de Ciencias (1996). Over the next decade, he disappeared from screens for some time to devote himself to his family. He returned with Pasión in 2007 and My Sin in 2009, the latter This was a special task for her because of the painful process she went through behind the scenes.

Antonieta Arellano, her mother, was hospitalized while Daniela was filming the soap opera. The actress had to divide into three groups to take care of her children and her mother’s health and to comply with the demands. She went into crisis when the doctors treating her informed her that the lady’s days were numbered.

“My mother had cancer and I was recording. They had given her 20 days So I said, “I’m leaving the soap opera.” She grabbed my hand and said to me, “No way, you’re not leaving a soap opera, you’re moving on.” It was very hard because I had to leave very early to be with my mother to see because I knew that that day I would be without her,” he explained in an interview with the program Cuéntamelo ya! in 2020, just before the pandemic.

With the medical certainty that there was no chance of prolonging his mother’s life, Daniela barely had three weeks to be by her side. That’s why she wanted to end her participation in My Sin by suggesting to producer Juan Osorio that she kill her character Rosario Pedraza. At the last minute, he was unable to bring this proposal to the table because he had promised his mother that he would fulfill this obligation.

“This is the most difficult experience of helplessness, of pain, of knowing that you are committed to a successful project. That you have a protagonist, because I was the protagonist of the big ones and Maytesita was the protagonist of the children, and you can’t throw that away. Everything I experienced and learned before didn’t allow me to tell them, “That’s all I plan to do, kill me, I want to be with my mother.”

After several weeks in the hospital, Antonieta Arellano died. This already terrible departure brought two consequences for Daniela: great guilt for not spending more time with her mother, and a mental block from crying in situations that encourage or justify it.

In December 2021, his father, musician Javier Castro, a member of the Los Hermanos Castro musical dynasty, died. He took this duel with a different perspective. The lesson learned from not being able to spend time with her mother led her to take advantage of her father to the end. Two years after his death, she speaks about him without a hint of embarrassment or sadness because she enjoyed it.

This was visible in the show Montse y Joe with Montserrat Oliver and Yolanda Andrade, when they reminded him of passages with his father. However, when he talks about his mother, his voice changes, he becomes encouraged. It still hurts. This episode still hurts him and still affects him in terms of crying.

“In real life I’m more reserved. Since my mother’s death I have had a very strong blockage and now it is difficult for me to cry. I know that if the novel makes me cry, I will cry. I will remember things and do them.

The last time she came close to tears was at the memorial service for her uncle Benito Castro, who died in September 2023. She spoke to the press with emotion. He shared his feelings in a broken, broken voice. However, since he has been suffering since 2009, it is difficult for him to cry in reality. In fiction, he does, and he uses the memory of his mother to accomplish this.
