According to the Presidency, Colombia will also be part of the Fund’s Steering Committee, which will finance projects and actions that support countries in prevention, mitigation and preparedness measures for responding to emergencies and disasters, as well as adapting to climate change.
The accession ceremony took place this Tuesday at the San Carlos Palace, headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in the presence of the Vice Minister for Multilateral Affairs, Javier Darío Higuera, and the Argentine Ambassador to Colombia, Gustavo Dzugala.
In this way, Colombia renews its strong commitment to the prevention and relief of disasters in the region.
“As a member of the Greater Caribbean, Colombia recognizes the vulnerability of this region and promotes initiatives that help mitigate natural disasters that threaten the lives, infrastructure and natural resources of Caribbean countries and have significant socio-economic and environmental impacts,” he noted . He stressed that in this sense and given the issues prioritized by the Head of State Gustavo Petro in defense of the planet and human existence, the incorporation of Colombia into Facrid represents a significant step forward in the fight against climate change.
Additionally, progress towards a stronger and more resilient region in the face of climate challenges and natural disasters.
Given the immediate urgency of the child phenomenon in the region, Colombia also underlines the relevance of Facrid and urges other countries to join.
The fund was created by Mexico in 2021 when it held the interim presidency of Celac. It will finance projects and activities aimed at strengthening disaster response capacity and promoting a vision of comprehensive, resilient and sustainable development in the region.
Eligible candidates are government agencies, regional intergovernmental organizations and organizations of the United Nations system.
Celac member states and other public actors can make voluntary contributions to Facrid, and ECLAC is responsible for managing the fund’s resources and can accept contributions from countries and international organizations that are not part of the agreement.
The Fund’s Steering Committee, of which Colombia will be a member, will be responsible, among other things, for evaluating and deciding on the allocation of funds for the implementation of projects and activities.
