The Minister of Culture takes over chair number 28, previously occupied by singer Elza Soares, who died in January 2022. Sonia Guajajara now occupies the newly created chair in honor of Paulo Paulino Guajajara, an indigenous leader murdered by illegal loggers in Maranhão.

“I never thought about joining a Brazilian academy. It’s a little crazy, but I’m grateful,” said Margareth Menezes. “That it? Strong, right? I never imagined that I would be immortal. But I believe in reincarnation; so we are all immortal anyway,” he added.

The Brazilian Cultural Academy is attended by 55 personalities from different areas of the country’s culture, including the singer Zeca Pagodinho, the presenter and journalist Fátima Bernardes and the actress Lilia Cabral.
