‘Indecent’: Conservative Party calls on Quebec to scrap its $5 million subsidy to the Los Angeles Kings

The leader of Quebec’s Conservative Party minced no words in calling on the Quebec government to scrap its $5 million to $7 million in subsidies earmarked for the Los Angeles Kings hockey team.

“It is an insult to the teacher who is told that the government does not have a penny left for her raise, but millions of dollars for a multi-million dollar American professional hockey team that can train at the Videotron Center,” insisted the head of the Conservative Party of Quebec, Éric Duhaime, in a press release on Wednesday.

The latter therefore denounced the exorbitant amount announced by the Quebec government to allow the arrival of the Los Angeles Kings team at the Videotron Center in Quebec in October 2024.

“It is indecent to note that the Legault administration is donating more than $5 million to the Kings while the Montreal Canadiens were willing to come for free,” he added in writing.

The announcement had already provoked strong reactions on Tuesday, when several MPs took the floor to express their opposition.

“The CAQ is passing the palette to the NHL and not to the people who are struggling. Yes, I love hockey. But not at this price,” complained Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois, parliamentary leader of Québec Solidaire.

“In the meantime, the CAQ is eliminating the assistance program to maintain essential regional air services. We are talking about very similar amounts. The government is paying for the Kings’ trip to Quebec, but is cutting regional air traffic. I am speechless,” said Joël Arseneau, PQ MP for Îles-de-la-Madeleine.
