Four of these people were taken to hospital.

We fear for the life of one of them, a 59-year-old woman who was significantly affected by smoke during Wednesday’s fire in an apartment on Rue Gascon in the Hochelaga-Maisonneuve district.

According to the Montreal City Police Service (SPVM), the three-story apartment building was evacuated, but the flames were confined to the apartment where the injured woman lives. At the end of the night, the tenants were able to return home while the woman was treated at the hospital.

The cause of this disaster was not yet known at the end of the night, but the SPVM, which is leading the investigation, doubted that it was of criminal origin.

The other fire broke out around 9:40 p.m. in a 15-apartment building on Melrose Street, near the intersection with Wellington Street, in the Verdun neighborhood.

Three of the eight injured were taken to hospital, but all will survive, according to the SPVM.

The damage caused to the building is significant. Investigators from the Montreal Fire Safety Service (SSIM) will shed light on the causes of this disaster.
