Silverchair frontman Daniel Johns talks to David Helfgott about his “loud mind” and synesthesia in a new documentary

Daniel Johns will discuss his “noisy mind” and suffering from synesthesia in a new documentary from acclaimed Shine director Scott Hicks.

The former Silverchair frontman, 44, will speak at length about his condition in The Musical Mind, a film that explores the creative processes of famous neurodivergent musicians.

“I don’t want to sound alarmed, because I’m not, but my head is loud, and it always has been since I was a kid,” Johns says in a trailer.

I’m really fascinated and inspired by images. When I listen to music, I feel more than just the notes. What excites me most is the sight, the colors and the smells.”

Synesthesia is a perceptual phenomenon in which the senses are mixed so that a person may perceive a range of colors when listening to music.

Earlier this month, Johns announced that he would be deleting his social media accounts to focus on his music career.

The rock star shared a post on Instagram on Tuesday telling fans that he will be shutting down his page to focus on his semi-autobiographical feature “What If The Future Never Happened?”

“I’m notoriously bad at stopping and smelling the roses, so I’m putting this up here to remind myself,” he said.

“I turn off my social media, put my phone in a drawer and get back to work.”

He went on to say that his 2022 album FutureNever was the “most gratifying creative experience of my career” and that he had “never felt more connected to fans.”
