Floods in Vietnam: two dead and three missing

Two people have died and three are still missing after heavy rains caused flooding in central Vietnam, authorities said on Thursday.

Vietnam’s former imperial capital Hue was particularly hard hit by the floods. According to the national authority responsible for natural disasters, 16,000 houses in this city were partially submerged.

A 40-year-old woman died and her 18-year-old daughter, who was swept away by the water, remains missing after the boat they were traveling on capsized, state media reported.

The body of a 36-year-old man who had gone fishing at a lake was also found on Wednesday in Quang Tri province, north of Hue, they added.

According to authorities, more than 4,000 people have evacuated their homes in five provinces in Vietnam.

Parts of the highway connecting the north and south of Vietnam were also disrupted due to landslides caused by the rains.

Weather forecasters say the recession will begin this weekend.

Between June and November, during the rainy season, the Asian country regularly experiences heavy rainfall.

Some 138 people have been killed or missing in natural disasters this year, including floods and landslides, according to official data.

Extreme weather events are being made worse by global warming, scientists say.
