NHL games in distant countries are far from over

The NHL is looking forward to its international tournament

Some hockey fans will say that National League (NHL) deputy commissioner Bill Daly is repeating himself, but he insisted at a press conference on Thursday on the circuit’s goal of organizing an international tournament in February 2025.

As journalist Chris Johnston of the TSN network indicated on his X account, the NHL wants to move in this direction before sending its players to the 2026 Olympic Games in Milan-Cortina d’Ampezzo. Daly, along with big boss Gary Bettman, was on hand to meet the media on the sidelines of the four-match presentation in Stockholm and also made it clear that a World Cup would take place two years later if everything goes as planned.

Discussions with the NHL Players’ Association are currently continuing.

In August, Bettman’s right-hand man made the league’s intentions clear. “The goal [est] “to begin a regular rotation between participation in the Olympics and a hockey world championship in the following even years,” he told the website NHL.com.

The last time NHL skaters took part was in Sochi in 2014. Two years later a world championship was also held in Toronto.
