Uruguay is optimistic about the Mercosur EU negotiations

This was announced by Uruguayan Vice-Chancellor Nicolás Albertoni and EU Ambassador Paolo Berazzi, who attended the second European Economic Meeting in Uruguay this year.

Albertoni said the next Mercosur meeting in Paraguay “can be a summit where we can see good news about progress on what is potentially the most important regional agreement in the world.”

For his part, Berazzi expressed that negotiations have intensified in recent weeks, with particular attention paid to issues of sustainability and other issues that Mercosur partners have brought to the table.

He stressed that there will be a reduction in tariffs, liberalization of areas of activity, new predictable and transparent rules that will also attract new investments, job creation, promotion of innovation and improved productivity.

He stressed that the European Union is interested in reviewing the consular fee, the port price structure with different rates for imported and exported products, the existence of 19 different food registries in the country’s departments and import permits.

“Perhaps it is time for a review to streamline procedures and reduce costs. This would serve to generate more trade and improve the country’s competitiveness,” he noted.
