The squad represents significant continuity: a total of 19 of the 23 players who took part in camp last month are heading to Austin, including goalscorers Folarin Balogun and Gio Reyna. The roster features 12 players who were part of the USMNT team at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and 15 players helped the U.S. win its second consecutive Concacaf Nations League title last June.

EYES ON THE PRICE

The quarterfinal round not only positions the USMNT to win its third consecutive CNL championship, but also serves as qualification for the prestigious Copa America 2024, South America’s premier international tournament, which will be played in the United States next summer. The 2024 edition of the event will feature ten CONMEBOL nations and six Concacaf host nations, including defending World Cup and Copa America champions Argentina, led by captain and Inter Miami attacker Lionel Messi.

Light the lamp

With 43 goals scored in 16 games this year, the U.S. goal scorers are varied. Seven of the 13 players who hit the net for the USMNT in 2023 are on this roster: Ricardo Pepi (6), Brenden Aaronson (2), Folarin Balogun (2), Weston McKennie (2), Gio Reyna (2), Chris Richards (1), Alex Zendejas (1)

THE BUDDY SYSTEM

There are four groups of clubmates on the squad, all from European teams: Fulham (Ream, A. Robinson), PSV Eindhoven (Dest, Pepi, Tillman) and Nottingham Forest (Horvath, Turner).

The PSV trio all met with former US Soccer sporting director Earnie Stewart in Eindhoven this summer. Tim Ream and Antonee Robinson are teammates at Craven Cottage in their fourth season. Matt Turner moved from Arsenal to Nottingham Forest where he met Ethan Horvath, who had returned to the English Championship from a successful promotion campaign with Luton Town.

Brothers on and off the field

Brenden and Paxten Aaronson are the ninth pair of brothers to represent the USMNT and could become the eighth pair to play in the same international match. The first opportunities will come during this month’s Concacaf Nations League quarterfinal series against Trinidad and Tobago.

Both are products of the Philadelphia Union’s YSC Academy and play in the top German league. Brenden is on loan at FC Union Berlin for a year, while Paxten is enjoying his first year in the Bundesliga with Eintracht Frankfurt.

Here’s more on the fascinating story of the brothers who shared the field for the USMNT.

VS. THE SOCA WARRIORS

The USA and Trinidad & Tobago have met 28 times so far, making the Soca Warriors the fifth most frequent opponents in USMNT history.

  • The USA has a 21-3-4 lead against Trinidad and Tobago. The 21 wins against Trinidad are the USMNT’s second-most against an international opponent after Mexico (23 wins).
  • The last competitive meeting between the teams took place during the 2023 Gold Cup group stage. The USMNT secured a 6-0 victory in their final group game on July 2 in Charlotte, North Carolina, with an outstanding performance from striker Jesús Ferreira. Hat trick at the half, while Cade Cowell, Gianluca Busio and Brandon Vazquez scored second-half goals to secure the U.S. top spot in Group A.
  • The rivalry between the United States and Trinidad and Tobago dates back to March 21, 1982, a 2-1 friendly win in the Trinidadian capital Port of Spain.
  • The away game in Trinidad comes one day after the 34th anniversary of one of the most significant goals in U.S. soccer history. On November 19, 1989, Paul Caligiuri’s “Shot Heard ‘Round the World” gave the USMNT a 1-0 victory on the final day of qualifying for the 1990 FIFA World Cup, sending the United States back to the tournament for the first time since 1990 40 years.

USMNT IN TWO-LEG SERIES

While November’s games officially count as the quarterfinals of the 2023/24 Concacaf Nations League, the home-and-away series also serves as qualifiers for next year’s Copa America in the United States. Although two-game series are more common in the knockout stages of competitions such as the UEFA Champions League, this will be the seventh time the USMNT will play a two-game series with a different opponent and it is the first time they have takes place outside of World Cup qualification. The USMNT enters this month’s series with the Soca Warriors holding a 4-2 record in two-game series and winning each of their last four games.

IN THE Q2 STADIUM

Q2 Stadium has hosted USMNT games in three different official competitions, with all three previous visits ending in narrow victories in front of sellout crowds. Gyasi Zardes scored the 86th-minute winner in the team’s 1-0 semifinal win over Qatar en route to the 2021 Gold Cup title. Three months later, 18-year-old striker Ricardo Pepi scored two goals to give the United States a 2-0 win over Jamaica in World Cup qualifying.

Last June, Jesús Ferreira’s four goals led the USA to a 5-0 win over Grenada as the team began its successful 2022-23 Concacaf Nations League season. Ferreira’s four goals set a team record for most goals in a game. The win extended the USMNT’s unbeaten streak on U.S. soil to 26 straight games and also tied the team’s record set in 2013-2015.
