A strong fire that broke out this Thursday afternoon in a shoe warehouse in Tepito, in the center of Mexico City, has caused serious damage to the site and the evacuation of about 500 people, according to a statement from the Secretariat of Comprehensive Risk Management. The causes of the event and whether there were heavy casualties are unknown, but authorities are already working to contain the eruption, which has resulted in intense columns of black smoke visible from various parts of the city.
The Cuauhtémoc mayor’s office said that “disaster response personnel, as well as the various territorial directorates of the Cuauhtémoc mayor’s office and the authorities of this district” have already arrived to assist the fire department in extinguishing the fire. The head of the secretariat, Urzua Venegas, is on site to coordinate the actions.
