Two pro-Iranian fighters were killed early Friday by Israeli airstrikes that targeted a Lebanese Hezbollah weapons depot and other sites near the Syrian capital Damascus, an NGO said.
For its part, the official Syrian agency Sana reported “material damage” from these Israeli airstrikes, adding that Syrian air defenses intercepted several missiles.
“At around 2:25 a.m. (0025 GMT), the Israeli enemy carried out an air strike from the occupied Golan Heights on several positions near Damascus,” Sana said, citing a military source.
According to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (OSDH), which has an extensive network of sources in Syria, “two foreign fighters” from pro-Iranian militias were killed and several others injured.
The attacks “destroyed a Hezbollah weapons depot” located on the road to Damascus International Airport, which fights alongside the Syrian regime, the OSDH said.
They also targeted “Hezbollah and pro-Iranian militia sites” near the airport and the mausoleum of Sayeda Zeinab, where Shiite militiamen, particularly Iraqis and Lebanese, are located.
Israel has carried out several raids in Syria in recent weeks since the war against the Palestinian Hamas broke out.
Damascus Airport has been out of service since a targeted strike on October 22nd.
According to the OSDH, an Israeli attack on Lebanese Hezbollah positions killed three pro-Iranian fighters near the Syrian capital on November 8.
Since the war there began in 2011, Israel has carried out hundreds of airstrikes on Syrian territory.
Its air force particularly targeted troops backed by Iran and Hezbollah, Israel’s arch-enemies, as well as the Syrian army. Israel rarely comments on attacks in Syria but says it wants to prevent Iran from establishing itself on its doorstep.
