Texas A&M AD: Football program remains “stuck in neutral” under Fisher
Texas A&M athletic director Ross Bjork discusses his decision to part ways with football coach Jimbo Fisher.
ALLEN PARK, Mich. – After the Detroit Lions are off to their best start since 2014 at 7-2, coach Dan Campbell has no interest in jumping ship, not even for his alma mater Texas A&M.
When the Aggies fired Jimbo Fisher on Nov. 12, Campbell said he “may have” been approached for the head coaching position, but he had no interest in helping the school in that role because he was comfortable in his current position feel.
“Perhaps. But that’s all good. “Certainly I know some people there and I love my school,” Campbell said during Friday’s practice. “This is my alma mater and I want to do whatever I can to help them other than coaching for them. So, and that’s what I’m going to do.”
Campbell is in his third season as coach leading the Lions to the top of the NFC North division.
In college, he was a four-year letterman for the Aggies from 1995 to 1998 while studying agricultural development.
Although he has no interest in coaching A&M, he suggested selecting a candidate who is familiar with the program and passionate about the athletes.
“Look, I don’t want to get involved in this,” he said. “Certainly hiring is important, and it has to be someone who understands the state of Texas, understands the history of Texas A&M and can communicate with and develop young people. I think this is the beginning. Strong leadership.”
Detroit hosts the Chicago Bears on Sunday with a chance to secure their best 10-game start since 1962.
