Armenia: Explosion at university leaves one dead and three injured

An explosion occurred at the chemistry faculty of the Armenian State University in Yerevan on Friday, killing one person and wounding three, the Caucasus country’s police said in a statement.

The explosion, accompanied by fire, occurred in the morning, according to the same source, in a basement that housed “a pumping station,” also used as a locker room for faculty staff.

“One of the employees died at the scene of the accident, three other people were taken to hospital,” one of them is in the intensive care unit, the police said.

The fire, which did not affect any nearby chemical depot, was brought under control in about an hour, she added.

“No traces of toxic gases were detected in the air,” the same source said.

According to initial information, the explosion was caused by a “fluctuation in electric current,” said Qnar Missakian, spokesman for Yerevan State University.
