Uruguayan President travels to China on official visit

Montevideo, November 16 (Prensa Latina) Uruguayan President Luis Lacalle Pou, several of his ministers and a group of businessmen begin today a trip to China, where the president will pay an official visit.

The program begins on Monday with a tour of the Great Wall of China and the Forbidden City.

The hearing between Lacalle Pou and the President of the Chinese Council for the Promotion of International Trade continues on Tuesday.

It continues with a commercial promotion event for goods, services and country brands, a seminar on trade relations and the presidential conference at Tsinghua University.

The Uruguayan president will attend a seminar on investment opportunities on Wednesday ahead of his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

An audience with the President of the National People’s Congress, Zhao Leji, is scheduled for Thursday.

The delegation consists of Foreign Minister Omar Paganini; the Minister of Economy Azucena Arbeleche; the Head of Industry, Elisa Facio, and the Head of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries, Fernando Mattos, as well as business representatives.

In the absence of a free trade agreement (FTA) with China, Uruguay is today seeking to strike new trade deals with the Asian giant

Minister Mattos highlighted Uruguay’s intention to expand the current export protocol for sheep and beef.

China is the largest buyer of Uruguayan meat, although its imports have been lower in recent months.

Before Lacalle Pou’s visit, the following people traveled through Beijing: Mattos; the then Minister of Industry, Energy and Mines (MIEM) and current Chancellor, Omar Paganini, and the Secretary of the President’s Office, Álvaro Delgado.
