The most expensive bottle of whiskey in the world was sold in England for 2.18 million pounds the equivalent of R$ 13.2 million. The bid made this Saturday (18) broke the record set in 2019, when the drink was valued at 1.5 million pounds (R 9.2 million).
According to auction house Sotheby’s, the Macallan distillery’s single malt whiskey has set a new record for a bottle of wine and spirits at the current price.
But what is so special about single malt?
The Scotch whiskey was distilled in 1926, Macallan’s oldest vintage, and aged in sherry casks for six decades until it was bottled in 1986.
Aging in oak barrels gave the drink a dark color and a final flavor of “nuts,” “spices” and “wood,” according to Jonny Foyle, in charge of auctions of this distillate at Sotheby’s.
The bottle sold this Saturday is the last in a series of 12 bottles whose label was designed in 1993 by the Italian painter Valerio Adami.
Only 40 bottles were produced from the original cask of this whiskey. One of them, 70 cl, was sold in 2019 for almost 1.5 million pounds (5.9 million reais at the time), the previous record.
One milliliter was taken from the item sold this Saturday for testing and comparison with another bottle from the 1926 vintage and will henceforth serve as a reference for future testing.
