Actress Suzanne Shepherd, best known for playing Carmela Soprano’s mother on “The Sopranos,” died Friday at her home in New York. She was 89 years old.
A representative for Shepherd confirmed the news to CNN in a statement on Sunday.
The cause of death was not disclosed, but the actress suffered from a chronic illness that blocked her lungs, according to her agent.
In addition to “The Sopranos,” a series in which she appeared in 20 episodes, Suzanne Shepherd’s notable roles include appearances in the films “Goodfellas,” “Requiem for a Dream,” and “Mystic Pizza.”
Her last appearance on the big screen was her role as “Tess” in the film “The Performance,” which was released in Italy in October.
