The leader of the far-right party La Libertad Avanza, Javier Milei, obtained 55.69 percent of the vote in the second round of the presidential elections held this Sunday in Argentina, compared to 44.30 percent for the official candidate Sergio Massa.
Milei, whose victory marks the decline of the dominant traditional forces over the past two decades, will take office on December 10 and will remain in office until 2027.
Argentina, along with Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Ethiopia, the United Arab Emirates and Iran, is invited to join the Brics group, which currently consists of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, from January 1, 2024.
During the election campaign, Milei hesitated to allow Argentina to join the Brics states, saying he would not “promote deals with the communists because they do not respect the basic parameters of free trade, freedom and democracy.”
In his speech on Sunday, Milei did not name any measures to be taken after the government takes office, but MP Diana Mondino, who will be chancellor in the future government, said Argentina would not accept the Brics group’s invitation.
