The world still needs coal says Glencore boss

Coal for sale on Black Friday in Poland

“Black Friday” price cuts will be extended to coal sales in Poland this year, the largest Polish mining company announced on Monday in a press release published on X (formerly Twitter).

PGG Group (Polish mining group) is offering a discount of 200 zloty (about 45.90 euros) or 15% to 18% per ton of coal purchased online during this commercial promotion called “Black Weeks”, which started on Monday.

Since it snowed for the first time in Poland this weekend and coal prices usually rise at this time of year, the company announced its second significant price cut in a week, after already ordering a cut of 200 zloty per tonne last Monday.

These repeated sales highlight the complicated situation facing Polish coal companies, which accumulated significant inventories last year before facing sluggish demand this year.

According to the CIS national statistics office, around 20% of Poles still heated with coal in 2021, compared to 36% in 2018.

This significant decline is due in particular to massive government subsidies aimed at replacing coal-burning stoves, the main cause of poor air quality, with less polluting alternatives.
