A US Navy plane landed in the sea in Hawaii, an American state in the Pacific Ocean, after the pilot misjudged the size of the runway when landing. The incident occurred last Monday (20) in Kaneohe Bay on the island of Oahu, near the capital Honolulu.

According to the local portal HawaiiNewsNow, the incident occurred at 1:57 p.m. with the P8 Poseidon aircraft at the military base on the main Hawaiian island. After the accident, the plane partially submerged while another part floated.

Local authorities confirmed there were nine people on board, but they managed to escape via the emergency exits and swam to shore. According to military sources interviewed by the Hawaii website, the crew was conducting “emergency training” at the time of the incident.

The Navy reported that the P8A Poseidon that attempted to land in Kaneohe Bay was a replacement for the P3C Orion, another aircraft.

Accordingly, the P8 Poseidon aircraft has the function of maritime patrol and area reconnaissance, always in use with small crews. The aircraft is responsible for longrange missions as well as surveillance and combat against submarines and ships.

The military at the base quickly surrounded the aircraft with buoys to prevent fuel leaks from contaminating the sea. The local military authorities guarantee that there is no risk of pollution at the site.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the runway remained closed for landings and takeoffs this Tuesday (21).
