“Extremely poisonous” snake on the loose in the Netherlands

An “extremely poisonous,” almost two-meter-long green mamba escaped from its owner in the south of the Netherlands, local authorities warned on Tuesday and called on the population to exercise extreme caution.

The municipality of Tilburg urged residents of a neighborhood near the train station to “be particularly careful and not approach the snake.”

Unless the reptile seeks confrontation itself, it remains “very dangerous” and “its bites are extremely venomous,” she said in a press release.

“If someone is bitten, it is important that that person receives immediate medical attention,” she adds.

A photo of the curled up green reptile was posted on the municipality’s website.

She urged residents to keep their distance, stay calm and call 911 immediately if they spot the snake. “Don’t try to catch the snake yourself,” she emphasizes.

The snake is mostly active during the day and is between six and six feet long, she said.

“Experts point out that the tropical snake will not come out so quickly due to the weather (…), it likes dark and warm rooms,” says Tilbourg.

On Monday evening, police received a report from the pet’s owner that “a snake” was missing. In the meantime, he “moved his other animals elsewhere,” she says.
