Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan, stars of the 1984 original and 2010 remake of The Karate Kid, respectively, will reprise their beloved characters for the new film The Karate Kid from Sony Pictures.

Award-winning I’m Not Okay with This and The End of the F-ing World creator Jonathan Entwistle is directing the untitled feature film, which the studio says will continue the mythology of the original series.

A global search for a new actor to play the title character was launched today. Chan and Macchio appear in an introductory video, which you can watch below.

Rob Lieber (“Peter Rabbit”) wrote the screenplay. While plot details are not yet known, it is said that the story will be about a teenager from China who now lives on the East Coast of the United States. They find strength and guidance through martial arts and a tough but wise mentor.

Karen Rosenfelt is producing the film, which is scheduled to begin filming in the spring before hitting theaters on December 13, 2024.

It was previously hinted that this was supposed to be a Mr. Miyagi prequel, although this apparently isn’t the case. The final season of the popular sequel “Cobra Kai” with Macchio in the lead role is also being filmed shortly before release at the end of 2024.
