Marquette’s Shaka Smart distributes breakfast to students on the first day
Marquette basketball coaches Shaka Smart and Megan Duffy and Marquette President Mike Lovell hand out a free breakfast to students on the first day of classes.
Mike De Sisti, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
Those winning goals had to taste pretty delicious for the Marquette men’s basketball team after the Golden Eagles defeated the No. 1-ranked Kansas Jayhawks 73-59 in the semifinals of the Maui Invitational on Tuesday night.
Less than 24 hours later, Shaka Smart will lead his No. 4-ranked team into the championship game against the No. 2-ranked Purdue Boilermakers as the Golden Eagles look to defeat another top-10 team in the program’s storied history. Marquette is also trying to do something no other team has ever done by beating the top two ranked teams on consecutive days.
Against Kansas, Marquette (5-0) largely held Jayhawks star Hunter Dickinson at bay as its stifling and active defense wreaked havoc on possession. Now the challenge becomes greater on Wednesday afternoon against Zach Edey and Purdue (5-0).
The 7-foot-4 Edey is the reigning national player of the year and is poised for another All-American season, averaging 22.0 points and 10.8 rebounds per game.
The game could be a Final Four preview with two teams that have national title aspirations.
