Once again, 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy proved the doubters wrong in the 49ers’ most recent win.
The second-year quarterback showed off his arm strength in San Francisco’s 27-14 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, dispelling the notion that he lacks arm strength or the ability to throw the ball deep.
Deebo Samuel may have an idea as to why Purdy looks stronger on the field.
“It looks like my husband has been lifting some weights,” Samuel said. “He’s getting a little stronger and it looks pretty good coming off his arm.
“I wouldn’t say it’s too hard a ball. He now has a little feel for the ball and a little power behind it.”
Purdy’s “pretty good” arm strength earned him NFC Offensive Player of the Week honors for his performance in the Week 11 win after a perfect performance at Levi’s Stadium. Purdy completed 21 of 25 passes for 333 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions and posted a perfect passer rating of 158.3.
One of those was a 76-yard touchdown pass to 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk – the longest throw of Purdy’s career.
Pick No. 262 – the final selection in the 2022 NFL Draft – currently leads the league with a passer rating of 115.1.
One of Purdy’s biggest concerns coming out of college and early in his professional career was his arm strength. He’s not a flashy quarterback with dazzling arm talent like Patrick Mahomes or Josh Allen. But he does just enough in every game and finds a way to win.
“I think Brock’s arm has gotten stronger and stronger from the first game to now,” 49ers general manager John Lynch said on KNBR’s “Murph & Mac” show Tuesday morning (h/t 49ers Webzone). “Maybe he was able to rest a little bit during the break week and he came back with a little more juice. But basically it’s a matter of putting it in the right place. He has all the arm strength you need. He throws it so precisely. “He makes such good decisions and is just playing the position extremely well at the moment. We have to maintain that.
“He’s got all the arm strength you’ll ever need,” Lynch said. “Is it stronger than last year? I don’t know, but things are looking really good right now, as evidenced by the perfect passer rating and all those things. And most importantly, he led us to a victory. And Brock.” He’s so mature and was talking about Seattle in the locker room shortly after the game. So he understands. He is amazing [leader].”
