(CNN) –– Axl Rose, lead singer of the rock band Guns N’ Roses, was accused of sexually assaulting a Penthouse magazine model in a lawsuit filed Wednesday in New York.
Model and actress Sheila Kennedy, identified as the plaintiff, claims Rose “violently” sexually assaulted her in 1989 after they met at a New York nightclub. Kennedy is suing Rose for assault, battery, domestic violence and intentional infliction of emotional distress.
The lawsuit was filed Wednesday in New York State Supreme Court and obtained by CNN.
Kennedy is suing for an unspecified amount of money.
“We hope that Sheila Kennedy’s decision to file this lawsuit represents a major turning point for the music industry,” said Dr. Ann Olivarius, chairwoman of McAllister Olivarius’ board of directors, said in a statement to CNN on Wednesday. “Unfortunately, their report is all too typical of a culture of violence and sexual misconduct that has clearly existed for decades. It’s not just individual musicians who step out of line, but an industrial system that enables and then covers up their misconduct and crimes, silences survivors and normalizes sexual assault. “We hope Sheila’s bravery helps other victims find their voice.”
CNN has reached out to representatives for Rose for comment.
