The businessman Daniel Noboa took office as the new President of Ecuador this Thursday (23) at the Ecuadorian Congress. At 35, he is the youngest in this position.
Noboa’s family are banana producers. He was born in the USA, has a degree from foreign universities, is a sommelier and likes cars and horses, according to his press office. His father tried to become president five times but was unsuccessful.
Noboa will rule for 18 months, the remaining term of former President Guillermo Lasso. In May, Lasso dissolved Congress and called early elections to avoid political condemnation for corruption (the legislature was dominated by the opposition).
In addition to the institutional crisis, the country is also struggling with an increase in violence from drug gangs. According to the Ecuadorian Organized Crime Observatory, around 3,600 people have been murdered in the country this year.
Noboa must declare a state of emergency, a measure that allows him to use funds earmarked for other purposes, suspend some civil rights such as freedom of movement and mobilize soldiers into the streets.
Upon taking office, he stated that he intended to make changes to the country’s laws with new legislation in Congress.
“To combat violence, we must combat unemployment, the country needs jobs and to create them, I will ask the Assembly for urgent reforms that must be handled responsibly,” he said after taking office.
The new president’s faction National Democratic Action (ADN) has 17 of the 137 seats in parliament.
On Friday, Noboa allied with Correísmo (the largest force with 51 seats and a strong critic of his father) and the rightwing Social Christian Party (PSC, 18) to create a majority when it comes to appointing authorities such as president and two goes vice president. Presidents of Congress.
