US forces were attacked with missiles and armed drones four times in Iraq and Syria on Thursday, but there were no casualties or damage to infrastructure, a US military official said.
An official said on condition of anonymity that U.S. and international forces were attacked with multiple missiles and a disposable drone in two locations in northeastern Syria.
In Iraq, several unidirectional drones were launched from the Ain AlAsad air base west of Baghdad, and one drone was launched from a US military base near Erbil airport in northern Iraq.
A group calling itself the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, which analysts say is a collection of several Iraqi armed groups allied with Iran, claimed responsibility for the attacks in those locations earlier in the day.
The attacks came a day after the US attacked the armed group Kataeb Hezbollah (KH) south of Baghdad, in which eight of its members were killed, according to the KH.
The attack was condemned by the Iraqi government as an escalation and a violation of its sovereignty.
U.S. officials said the United States was targeting Iranianallied groups after an escalation of attacks that have targeted U.S. and international forces dozens of times since Oct. 17, 10 days after the start of the IsraelHamas war have taken.
As of Thursday, there had been 36 attacks in Iraq and 37 in Syria, the U.S. military official said.
