If Marc-Antoine Dequoy was worried about the reaction of English-speaking Alouettes fans, he can rest assured.

Moments after winning the Gray Cup, the Quebecer went up against the CFL’s English-only show and one particular network’s media coverage. “You know what, keep your English!” he said under the influence of emotion.

The method is not as scientific as Léger’s, but the thirty English-speaking supporters questioned about Dequoy’s comments during the parade all stood behind him.

“I agree 100% with what he said. It is true that there is a lack of respect for French speakers in the rest of Canada,” said Mary Steinberg.

Stephane Ioffredi waved a sign that read “DEQUOY FOR “MAIRE”.”

“He spoke with his feelings and I can recognize myself in him. […] I liked that as he exited the plane he returned to his comments in a more relaxed manner but still maintained his point of view. “What he said is true,” said the young man, who grew up on the West Island.

Filled with a wave of love

Dequoy is used to being one of the most popular players on his team. However, his “popularity” took a huge leap after the Gray Cup and his famous interview. He received hundreds of congratulatory messages. It was actually very special to see the Quebec flags waved high as he addressed the crowd.

“We are proud of who we are and where we come from,” Dequoy said. Quebecers are proud of their local team, made up of people from home, but also people like Cody Fajardo and the other Americans who follow our culture.

Fajardo, the Alouettes’ quarterback, was one of the most celebrated players in football. The MVP of the Gray Cup game feels like he’s been adopted by Montrealers.

“My family and I have received nothing but love since I signed here in February. I feel like I am fully part of this community. I’m really happy that I was able to bring the Gray Cup back to where it belongs.”
