The reality show Round 6: The challenge came out on Netflix and caused a lot of controversy. In addition to all the debate about the validity of a competition inspired by a series that criticizes exactly these kinds of proposals, the show has also been the subject of allegations of abuse and even manipulation. A Brazilian participant even mentions a case of sexual abuse that allegedly took place behind the scenes.

Musician Yohan Tanaka was the only Brazilian chosen to take part in the reality show and describes some of the situations he witnessed during the taping of the show, which took place in the United Kingdom. In an interview with IG journalist Gabriel Perline, the participant talks about an alleged case of harassment during filming with a woman who passed out during filming.

According to him, this person was part of a group composed of former participants of The challenge that she had been sexually abused in the hotel by someone from the production team. “She told us in the group that she was abused or attempted to sexually abuse her,” Tanaka says. “I don’t know how far this abuse went. But to me, just trying to harm someone is sexual abuse.”

Rigged game

Another point highlighted by the Brazilian musician is that, contrary to what the program suggests, the competition is not so fair and there is manipulation in favor of some participants who would be preselected to win the tests.

The idea of Round 6: The challenge is to simulate the experience shown in the South Korean series and pit 456 people against the prize of $4.56 million about R$22.3 million at the current price. The problem, as Tanaka says, is that the odds have never been equal for all competitors.

The Brazilian claims that he noticed the manipulation during the recording as it was clear that some people were treated differently by the production team. Some of them were able to go to the toilet in the middle of the game, while the vast majority had to endure long recording periods of up to 10 hours. In some cases, people fainted and it took a long time for help to arrive if it did at all.

“It took them another ten minutes because they were finishing filming,” Tanaka recalls. “They sent a coffin, which is part of the series, to hold the dead man.” They put the unconscious person in the coffin to capture it on camera.

In addition, the musician emphasizes that the microphones used by the “extras” i.e. the participants who did not have the help of the production were fake. According to him, the suspicion of matchfixing only increased after the discovery that it was just a piece of plastic with foam.

Finally, Tanaka says that he himself was harmed by this entire constellation, as he would have been eliminated even after successfully completing the first test.

Abuse and mistreatment

However, the Brazilian’s report is not the only one to point out the problems behind the scenes Round 6: The challenge. In fact, there were complaints before the premiere and have increased now that the reality show is available on Netflix. And the cases are already so extensive that former participants are organizing to file a claim for damages against the platform for mistreatment during filming.

The allegations are consistent with Tanaka’s statements and mainly relate to injuries and health problems he suffered during the taping of the show. The general accusation is that the production did not care about the safety of the participants and emphasized the spectacle and simulation of situations seen in the original series.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the law firm responsible for the prosecution claims that several of their clients were injured during filming due to the situations they faced, in addition to precarious safety standards on set. The result is that many participants claim to have suffered nervous system damage in addition to hypothermia as a result of being exposed to subzero temperatures for several hours during one of the games.

One of the participants told THR that the situation was behind the scenes Round 6: The challenge it was like a war zone and they couldn’t complain about the situation. “Whoever said something is eliminated,” says one of the 456 candidates in the game.

O Canaltech has contacted Netflix and is awaiting a response to the allegations. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, the reality show’s executive producer John Hay said that the program took every measure to take care of people and that all games were previously tested to ensure the safety of participants. Regarding hypothermia cases, he explains that the filming took place on a cold day and was quite complicated and timeconsuming. “But everyone was prepared and well taken care of,” he says.
