Country legend Dolly Parton is beloved by listeners of all ages, but despite her large family and strong bond with children, she and her husband Carl Dean never had children of their own. And according to Parton, that’s how it should be.

In an interview with the Today show, Parton spoke to host Matt Lauer about promoting her first children’s album, “I Believe in You.” She also works with children through her charity Imagination Library, which has distributed nearly 100 million free books to young children.

During the interview, Parton said fate led her to be a mother to everyone and not just a mother to her own children. “God has a plan for everything,” she said. “I think it was probably his plan for me not to have children so that all the children could be mine. And that’s what they are now.”

Previously, Parton said that she used to regret not having children, but now she no longer feels that way and has instead developed close bonds with her younger siblings and her nieces and nephews. “Now that Carl and I are older, we often say, ‘Aren’t you glad we didn’t have kids?’ Now we don’t have to worry about our kids,” she told Billboard.

She told Lauer that children were drawn to her, just like everyone else, and she credits this to her large family and her looks. “I have this high-pitched voice… I look like Mother Goose or one of those exaggerated characters, and kids can just relate to that,” she said.

Parton, 71, says she is now in her “second childhood,” which made it the perfect time to release songs for children. All proceeds from the album go to the Imagination Library. Watch the full interview on Today.com.
