Doctor Who presents new theme song, new TARDIS and new trailer as first Christmas special

Doctor Who

Today is a big day for Doctor Who fans as the series, currently set in the gap between Jodie Whitaker’s 13th Doctor and Ncuti Gatwa’s 15th by calling on good old David Tennant for a handful of episodes, is the first of released three planned specials to close the gap. Fans are already dissecting and filtering all the comedic moments, callbacks and running-around-screaming parts of The Star Beast, which reunites Tennant with his longtime companion Catherine Tate for the first time since 2010. But the franchise itself has also released a few new teasers to commemorate this moment, which coincides with the 60th anniversary of the series as a whole, including the release of a video featuring the series’ new theme song and title sequence, as well as a short teaser trailer for the next of Tennant and Tate’s adventures.

And while in a less charitable mood we might suggest that the new title sequence consists almost entirely of shots of the TARDIS flying through leftover bits of cosmic portals from every single Marvel Cinematic Universe film, as a kind of ill-advised homage to Disney’s New Role on the series’ international release, the new version of the classic theme song feels pretty good/appropriately epic. (The title sequence also politely mentions Pat Mill and Dave Gibbons, whose 1980 comic book Doctor Who was adapted in the episode.)

Meanwhile, the teaser for the next special, “Wild Blue Yonder,” is extremely short, although it does suggest that the next trip on the nostalgia tour will be all the way down to Doctor Who’s “horror TV for kids” side of things some sets that clearly seem to be lifted from Alien. (Or at least one of the many Doctor Who episodes that have been ripped off from Alien over the years, although the show’s set designers have had a chance to show it off recently a new TARDIS set.) The special will air on Disney+ on December 2nd, the third part will be released on December 9th. (And then Gatwa takes over the job with his own premiere episode on Christmas Day.)
